Cambrian and Publish

Hi Chris,

Can you discuss what implications that Cambrian (DNN 5.0) will have with the Publish module.  My understanding is that Cambrian will provide workflow and versioning for content management.  Since you are a DNN core member, are you participating in this development?  How will the Engage: Publish module change within DNN 5.0 and what do you anticipate to occur for current installs in DNN 4+ if clients wish to upgrade to 5.0.

Since my customers have this information I need to advise them on the best course of action before they commit funds.

Thanks and Best Regards.

Re: Cambrian and Publish

First let me point out something with regards to Cambrian. DNN Cambrian (5) will come out in multiple releases, the release that is in beta testing now has new features but does not include the versioning/workflow/multilanguage functionality. I do not know when those features will be available.

That being said, when these features are being developed we (Engage) will be analyzing what the core will be supporting and how we can setup Publish to work with the new features. If the new features provide benefits we will work to move the module in that direction, with the intention of providing an upgrade path at the same time.

I installed Publish on a Beta site the other day, ran into a few bugs within the core code itself but everything else within Publish worked well.

Long story short, fear not, Publish will continue to grow even with the new features and functionality coming from the core DNN project.

Re: Cambrian and Publish

Thanks very much for your prompt and concise response Chris!

It is unfortunate that we currently do not have a basis for comparison. It is comforting, however, to know that you are on top of the situation and can provide an assurance to current customers.  My customer is a prospective Publish purchaser.  Their concern is if Publish: i) will be evolving on a parallel path with DNN publishing capabilities, or ii) will it diverge to offer more or better publishing capabilities.  My response was to say that if Engage Publish was to continue to survive ii) is the more likely scenario.

After studying the Engage Publish architechture alongside DNN, it occurred to me that if you would incorporate the HtmlText table into your design it would make the purchase decision easier.  I mean, if I can tell my client that they can start using the Publish module and, if circumsances make it desireable, switch to DNN core content management, the decision is only about the cost of the module, not the cost of transferring the content.

Your dilema, I suppose, is would this capability enhance your marketability or damage it.  I think it would be a significant selling feature, but, if ii) above was always true it would hardly ever be implemented.

Re: Cambrian and Publish

We are looking at some Text/HTML options for the module, but it is unlikely we would ever store Publish data in existing core tables, unless the versioning/workflow were to somehow require that.

The data is all accessible, and scripts could be created if necessary to convert your data to run within other DNN modules if necessary in the future.

Thanks for your questions, if you have any other please let me know.
