If "Top Level" is selected as the category to display it will display content from multiple categories. I use on one of my sites to display articles from a number of categories with Item Listing> Articles> Top Level.

There isn't a way to pick content from selected categories, but this is a great idea and we can look into put it into the list of future enhancements.
